George Washington a demigod? a son of a God? Nephi lite? or worse a blue coat?
New Living Translation (NLT)
A World Gone Wrong
6 Then the people began to multiply on the earth, and daughters were born to them. 2 The sons of God saw the beautiful women[a] and took any they wanted as their wives. 3 Then the Lord said, “My Spirit will not put up with[b] humans for such a long time, for they are only mortal flesh. In the future, their normal lifespan will be no more than 120 years.”
4 In those days, and for some time after, giant Nephilites lived on the earth, for whenever the sons of God had intercourse with women, they gave birth to children who became the heroes and famous warriors of ancient times.
5 The Lord observed the extent of human wickedness on the earth, and he saw that everything they thought or imagined was consistently and totally evil. 6 So the Lord was sorry he had ever made them and put them on the earth. It broke his heart. 7 And the Lord said, “I will wipe this human race I have created from the face of the earth. Yes, and I will destroy every living thing—all the people, the large animals, the small animals that scurry along the ground, and even the birds of the sky. I am sorry I ever made them.” 8 But Noah found favor with the Lord.
Thought for the Day
The sons of God or Nephlites have and been a controversial subject among Christians because Genesis is so sparse on what the writers likely thought was common knowledge in their day. This leaves us in modern civilization a with a lot of head scratching. I suspect, that this text leading up to the flood, has created many atheist and or agnostics of people who can’t accept anything less than hard provable fact. In a world where we are still discovering much of our history, and have a lot of incomplete history this can be a problem. In cases like this, we have to take the book as a whole, look at the history it represents in the Old testament, and compare it to known history and work backwards. Giving up too soon, can be eternally fatal.
The main theories on the origin of the sons of God are 1. (Angels who rebelled against God, came to earth, and had offspring with the ladies. I question this theory, in that it would seem that by this point in history, the angels would not want to part with God when they saw the results of sin. We also have to ask, if Man was made in God’s image as we learned earlier, how can angels reproduce with human women when angels are not of the human species? The Bible says each creature reproduces based on his kind.) Theory number 2.(The sons of God were simply races of men who grew larger and stronger than their counterparts. These people lived and reproduced with each other causing a physically stronger, and possibly a ruling class.) I really can’t say what was meant by son’s of God, the above theories hold little merit in my mind. Maybe someday God will lead me to a better understanding. For now it is unclear, but in my mind does not make the Bible incorrect or wrong, more information, may follow.
A man named Steven Collins who I know little about has some commentary on this subject that I particularly enjoyed reading. The First half of the page by a man named Phillip explaining his view of the angel theory. The second half discusses Steven’s view-point which he has done a great job articulating. See the discussion
For those who are wanting an in-depth discussion of this topic. See AnsweringGenesis.org. This page discusses at length the popular views on who the sons of God were in this passage, and who the sons of God are today. So, I will not go any deeper here.
The main point in this passage is that God’s children, rebelled against him, choosing their own way over his. In less than 2000 years, we went from perfection in all creation, to total depravity. God decides to wipe out all mankind, but Noah found a place in God’s heart and becomes the chosen one. For me in my puny earthly mind, can’t understand why God did not just destroy everyone including Noah; and start over with a better human if he still wanted humans. He could have made the all-new human, human 2.0; rather than Human 1.2 – which now has a maximum life span of 120 years and the same faults. It looks like we are right back where we were before the flood; in our attitude toward Christ. What this tells me, is that God has more mercy and patience, than I am capable of, and his plans that are too great for me to understand. He spared Noah, and sent Christ for our sake about 3500 years later. We owe our very existence to him. The key here, is research all that you need to, but in the end, Trust and Obey.
Have a great day, and consider Christ in all that you do.
