New Living Translation (NLT)

neither wild plants nor grains were growing on the earth. For the Lord God had not yet sent rain to water the earth, and there were no people to cultivate the soil. Instead, springs[a] came up from the ground and watered all the land. Then the Lord God formed the man from the dust of the ground. He breathed the breath of life into the man’s nostrils, and the man became a living person. Then the Lord God planted a garden in Eden in the east, and there he placed the man he had made. The Lord God made all sorts of trees grow up from the ground—trees that were beautiful and that produced delicious fruit. In the middle of the garden he placed the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.10 A river flowed from the land of Eden, watering the garden and then dividing into four branches. 11 The first branch, called the Pishon, flowed around the entire land of Havilah, where gold is found. 12 The gold of that land is exceptionally pure; aromatic resin and onyx stone are also found there. 13 The second branch, called the Gihon, flowed around the entire land of Cush. 14 The third branch, called the Tigris, flowed east of the land of Asshur. The fourth branch is called the Euphrates.15 The Lord God placed the man in the Garden of Eden to tend and watch over it. 16 But the Lord God warned him, “You may freely eat the fruit of every tree in the garden— 17 except the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. If you eat its fruit, you are sure to die.”18 Then the Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper who is just right for him.” 19 So the Lord God formed from the ground all the wild animals and all the birds of the sky. He brought them to the man[b] to see what he would call them, and the man chose a name for each one. 20 He gave names to all the livestock, all the birds of the sky, and all the wild animals. But still there was no helper just right for him.

21 So the Lord God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep. While the man slept, the Lord God took out one of the man’s ribs[c] and closed up the opening. 22 Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib, and he brought her to the man.

23 “At last!” the man exclaimed.

“This one is bone from my bone,
and flesh from my flesh!
She will be called ‘woman,’
because she was taken from ‘man.'”

24 This explains why a man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife, and the two are united into one.

25 Now the man and his wife were both naked, but they felt no shame.

  1. Genesis 2:6 Or mist.
  2. Genesis 2:19 Or Adam, and so throughout the chapter.
  3. Genesis 2:21 Or took a part of the man’s side.

Thoughts for the day

The earth in the time of Adam knew no rain. Vs 5. The land was watered primarily by rivers and springs (or a mist). Some suppose the mist was like the morning dew we experience today. There was river that flowed into Eden and watered the main garden at the east end of property, then was split into four tributaries.  Versus. 10 – 15 Identify the tributaries to help us see where Eden originally existed. I am not sure why we are given this exact location. Wars, time, and geological change have pretty much erased the basic markers described here. The best modern theory on its location, based off of archaeological exploration; in my opinion can be found in the article of  “The Land Of Eden Located” 1964 by David J. Gibson.

The most important part of this chapter in my mind is that God made the Eden as a specific place on the new earth. He provided a perfect climate for all life to exist within its borders. Man was given the job of caring for all things.  God then did something very peculiar in vs 16, he placed a tree in Eden that Man was not to eat from. All the other trees were fine. This set the stage for trouble:  forbidden fruit, breeds curiosity! No one can resist the one thing they are told not to do, can they?

Then God made woman vs 18 – 24. Here he shows them living together naked, and shameless.  This was how God intended life to be. For those that want to live the “Back to Eden Life Style”, you not only need to eat fruits and nuts, but you also need to run around Naked. (You can legally do this in Quartzite Arizona in the Winter. (I guess they don’t worry about sand in their shorts)). You should save you a bundle on clothing expenses, but you are not careful you will need the money for legal fees.  The reality of the matter, is those who want to live the Eden life style have their hearts in the right place, but I do not believe it was what our creator has in mind for us today, because we live in an imperfect world. Try as hard as we wish, our efforts will not ever return the world to its Eden condition, or us to Man kinds perfect condition.

Christ will return, he loved his creation then, he loves his creation now, and those who trust in him will be restored to Eden.

Trust in Jesus to have a joyful day.

If you want to try your hand at Edenism, do so very carefully. Contact your Dr. and make sure your blood work is carefully monitored for Proteins, Thyroid levels, and B12 among other things. Chemistry that gets out of the norm, can cause severe malfunctions of the the brain and the body. Read lots of books, like the ones listed above, and work with others who are successful with the diet you are attempting. Above all, enjoy what your doing; and don’t condemn others for not joining in. Diet is a personal choice; done for personal reasons. Others may have reasons, that you do not understand, but they are likely just as valid. For more information on healthy eating as a Vegan and the pit falls see “The Family Dr.”
